about me
When I moved to Puget Sound's Vashon Island with my husband and musical collaborator Pete Droge in 1995, it was clear we'd landed in a unique spot. The island offered gorgeous, rural landscapes and a small community of progressive, artistic residents living in a quirky, small town, just a 15–minute ferry ride from Seattle. Vashon was the perfect respite from our hectic lifestyle as touring musicians. I immediately noticed that most islanders answered, "what do you do?" with more than one occupation. One was a belly dancer, potter and lawyer, another was a barista, buddist monk and butoh dancer! As we settled into island life when we weren't on the road, on a whim I took a two–day mosaics class offered at a local nursery, not realizing it would alter my creative life's course. As I continued making music from our home studio, mosaics became an increasingly important part of my life, developing into a small business and passion on par with my music. Yet another love of my life is animals, and in 2002 I began volunteering for Vashon Island Pet Protectors, our local, no–kill shelter for cats and dogs. I am the Vice President of this organization that has been around since 1984.
Who am I? I'm Elaine Summers, Mosaic Artist, Musician and Pet–Protector!
